SSC CGL: All you need to know about this Staff Selection Commission exam

SSC CGL: The SSC CGL, or Staff Selection Commission – Combined Graduate Level, exam is administered on a national scale to recruit candidates for Group B and Group C positions in various government departments in India. The Central Secretariat Service, the Central Vigilance Commission, the Intelligence Bureau, and the Ministry of Railways are only a few of the prominent government institutes that recruit SSC CGL-qualified candidates. The SSC selects candidates for various positions, including administrative, technical, and clerical positions. The SSC CGL examination is administered in three sessions, and registration typically begins in April. Typically, the initial examinations are administered in the month of July.4.

Exam Format

The SSC CGL (Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level) examination is comprised of three levels, each with its own exam structure:

POST BASIC QUALIFICATION
Statistical Investigator- Grade B Bachelor’s Degree from any recognized University with a minimum of 60% in Mathematics in Class 12th
Assistant Audit Officer Bachelor’s Degree in any subject from a recognized University
OR
CA/CS/MBA/Cost & Management Accountant/ Masters in Commerce/ Masters in Business Studies
Assistant Section Officer Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized University/Institute (Depending on the advertised post, candidates may also have to qualify in Computer Proficiency Test)
All other posts Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline from a recognized University or Institute

Tier 1

The initial phase of the SSC CGL exam is administered via computer-based examination (CBE). It consists of four sections: General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Knowledge, Quantitative Aptitude, and English Comprehension. In this phase, candidates must respond to a total of 100 questions, with a maximum score of 200 points conceivable. There is a 60-minute limit for completing the entire paper. Specifically, 0.50 points are deducted for each improper response. The scores obtained in Tier 1 are used to select candidates for Tier 2.

Tier 2

Round 2 is also administered via Computer-Based Examination (CBE), with four papers:

  • Paper I, Quantitative Abilities, evaluates the mathematical and quantitative abilities of candidates.
  • Paper-II: English Language and Comprehension This paper assesses candidates’ English proficiency and their ability to comprehend written text.
  • Paper-III Statistics: This paper assesses the statistical knowledge of candidates applying for certain positions as statistical investigators.
    General Studies-Finance and Economics: The concentration of this paper, which is reserved for Assistant Audit Officer and Assistant Accounts Officer positions, is finance and economics.

Each candidate is given two hours to complete each paper. It is important to observe that there is negative marking, with 0.25 marks deducted for each incorrect response on Paper-I, Paper-II, and Paper-III, and 0.50 marks deducted per incorrect response on Paper-IV.

Tier 3

The third round is conducted with pen and paper and is descriptive in nature. It comprises a 100-point essay writing exam in English or Hindi. Candidates are given 60 minutes to complete the exam. This phase assesses the candidate’s penmanship and language abilities.

The final selection for SSC CGL is based on the candidate’s cumulative performance in Tiers 1, 2, and 3. Depending on the advertised position, candidates may be required to take a Tier 4 exam consisting of a Computer Proficiency Test (CPT) that assesses their data entry and typing abilities.
