The Commission is seeking input from a variety of stakeholders.

UGC PG Curriculum Framework

Highlights from the UGC’s proposed PG programme curriculum and credit framework are listed below:

  • Three postgraduate programme designs have been suggested by the UGC: an integrated five-year curriculum, a two-year Master’s programme, and a one-year Master’s programme.
  • Students can join in a one-year Master’s programme after completing a four-year Bachelor’s study with research and honours.
  • A two-year postgraduate programme with a research-focused second year is available to graduates of a three-year bachelor’s degree.
  • After the first year, students can drop out of the two-year degree and pursue a postgraduate diploma. Guidelines also recommend a five-year combined bachelor’s and master’s course.
  • The suggested recommendations place a strong emphasis on postgraduate degrees in multidisciplinary subjects like artificial intelligence (AI) and core areas like machine learning in conjunction with industries including law, healthcare, and agriculture.
  • STEM graduates can also pursue master’s level technical degrees like technology or engineering.
  • Students are allowed to study two Master’s programmes concurrently under the guidelines. Students may choose to enrol in two full-time academic degrees in person or in a mix of one full-time programme offered in person and another offered online or through open and distance learning (ODL).
  • Graduates who have chosen to double major in one topic are able to do so at the master’s level, while those who have chosen a major and minor are able to do so at the postgraduate level.
  • Additionally, the recommendations recommend adding the component of PG work experience credits. Work experience that is applicable to the intended postgraduate programme may be credited, which may change the program’s length in accordance with NCrF requirements and evaluation results.
  • In a two-year degree, students can choose to focus entirely on research during the second year, or they can choose to take coursework in the third semester and research in the fourth.
  • The five-year integrated program’s PG level has 40 credits total and similar components.
  • Students can choose to pursue coursework, research, or a combination of both for a total of 40 credits in the one-year Master’s programme.
