UPSC: Meet UPSC topper Zainab Sayeed, Highest interview marks in civil services

Zainab Sayeed, an alumnus of Jamia Millia Islamia and a resident of Kolkata, had secured 107th rank in the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2014. Zainab had secured 731 marks in the written examination and 220 marks (out of 275) in the interview.

UPSC IAS: Which candidate would have topped the interview in the last 10 years history of UPSC Civil Services Examination? Maybe the names of Tina Dabi, Kanishk Kataria or Shubham Kumar come to your mind. But the reality is something else. Zainab Sayeed has scored the highest marks in the interview in the last 8 years of UPSC Civil Services Examination. Zainab Syed, an alumnus of Jamia Millia Islamia and a resident of Kolkata, had secured 107th rank in the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2014. Zainab had secured 731 marks in the written examination and 220 marks (out of 275) in the interview.

Since 2014, till date, no candidate has been able to secure the same number of marks as Zainab in the interview. In UPSC Civil Services Exam 2021, Ashutosh Kumar and Kiran PB had the highest 206-206 marks in the interview. Apala Mishra, who secured 9th rank in UPSC Civil Services Exam 2020, secured the highest 215 marks in the interview round. Shilpi, who got 256th rank in the year 2019, secured the highest 212 marks in the interview.

Zainab Syed, a resident of Chitpur, Kolkata, did this wonders in the UPSC exam, which was her third attempt. The shocking thing is that in the first two attempts, she could not even clear the prelims. Regarding his interview round, he had said, ‘I was asked which city I like more, Delhi or Kolkata. I said that Afkos Kolkata, I like the fast and lively life here. Here is my family, here is my home. I was asked questions from Current Affairs, International Relations, FDI in Retail, and European Union. The interview lasted for about 25 minutes. On behalf of the board, I was asked the name of the poet by telling me the lines of a poem. I could not answer this question and I told them clearly. The board members made me feel very comfortable in the interview round.

Hailing from a business family, Zainab did her English Honors at St. Xavier’s College. After this, he did MA in Mass Com in the year 2011 from Jamia University, Delhi. After that, she started preparing for UPSC. In 2012 and 2013, he gave his first and second attempts.
