World Suicide Prevention Day observed at AMU

The panellists urged the public to encourage individuals with mental and emotional stress to seek assistance from professionals and colleagues.

World Suicide Prevention Day: Aligarh Muslim University’s Department of Psychiatry and Department of Community Medicine co-hosted a World Suicide Prevention Day awareness programme at the Rural Health Training Centre (RHTC) in Jawan.

Prof. Saira Mehnaz (Chairperson, Department of Community Medicine) spoke on “Suicide Prevention: A Community Approach” and emphasised the importance of family, friends, and peers in assisting those with mental and emotional disorders.

 

Dr. Jitendra Kumar (Department of Psychiatry) delivered a lecture titled “Understanding Suicide and Mental Health Issues” in which he cast light on the various medical factors that cause mental health issues in a person and lead him to take the extreme step. He stated that such individuals should be quickly identified and referred for medical counselling.

Later, an interactive session was held with the panellists Prof Saira Mehnaz, Dr Jitendra Kumar, Dr Uzma and Dr Tabassum Nawab, which was moderated by Dr. Uzma (Incharge, RHTC, Jawan). The panellists urged the public to encourage individuals with mental and emotional stress to seek assistance from professionals and colleagues, and to provide support for their mental health issues.
