Fans of Yana Toboso’s original Black Butler manga had hoped for a genuine return from the anime, despite numerous OVA specials and even a feature film in the years following. A revival season of Black Butler is currently in the works for a 2019 release, so that lengthy wait will soon be over!
When Crunchyroll took the stage during their special panel at Anime Expo 2023 to promote all the new anime coming shortly to their streaming service, they announced that a new season of Black Butler is currently in development for a 2024 release.
The continuance of the anime rather than a reboot, Black Butler, has released a new teaser (which you can view in the video below).
Kenjiro Okada, employed by the production company CloverWorks, will supervise the upcoming season of Black Butler. Yumi Shimizu will design the characters, and Ryo Kawasaki will compose the soundscape.
Daisuke Ono will reprise his character as Sebastian Michaelis, and Maaya Sakamoto will reprise her role as Ciel Phantomhive, as the first two returning voice actors have already been confirmed.
Since the series is being hailed as a continuation rather than a reboot, now is the best opportunity to catch up. The first two seasons of Black Butler are now available on Hulu, and all three seasons are available in Funimation’s archive. Additionally, the Black Butler: Book of the Atlantic film is now accessible on Crunchyroll.
