Inside Job Season 2: A Twist in Plans, Netflix’s Decision to Cancel

While the precise reasons are unknown, they are likely related to costs, viewership, and completion rates.

Inside Job Season 2: Netflix has become accustomed to cancelling programmes, but this week marks an exception with the cancellation of “Inside Job” and the outrage of its passionate fanbase.

Job’s Unexpected Conclusion

“Inside Job” encountered an unusual destiny. Instead of a straightforward cancellation after its first season, it experienced a “un-renewal,” a rare but increasingly common occurrence in the volatile world of streaming.

The Shion Takeuchi-created show imagines a world in which conspiracy theories are true. It began with a 20-episode order split into two sections. After the initial set of 10 episodes aired in June 2022, a second season of the show was confirmed.

The situation, however, took an unexpected turn. It appears Netflix was dissatisfied with certain performance metrics associated with the second group of ten episodes, which premiered in November 2022.

This week, Netflix decided to cancel the series despite the earlier renewal. This affirmation was issued by Takeuchi herself via a public statement on the Internet.

Difficult Times for Animation: A Broader Tendency

Recent years have been difficult for the animation industry, particularly at WB Discovery, where numerous programmes were cancelled and others removed from the library.

This situation is reminiscent of the cancellation of the critically acclaimed animated series “Tuca and Bertie,” which had to be renewed elsewhere.

Renewal Afterwards, cancellation

It is uncommon for a show to be renewed and then cancelled, but it has occurred in the past. Netflix notably renewed “GLOW” for a final season, but subsequently reversed that decision due to COVID-19-related production challenges.

In the case of “Inside Job,” the reasons are likely a combination of metrics and cost-cutting measures. Fans, regardless of the reason, vented their displeasure, causing “Inside Job” to trend on Twitter with over 50,000 tweets within a few hours.

Gravity Falls versus The Insider

According to the show’s creator, the previous series, “Gravity Falls,” concluded on its own terms with a satisfactory conclusion.

It is uncertain how many seasons “Inside Job” had planned, but it was not given the chance to continue beyond its first season.

In the meantime, other animated series such as “Big Mouth” are receiving renewals for multiple seasons, including a seventh season.

While the precise reasons are unknown, they are likely related to costs, viewership, and completion rates. It’s disappointing, particularly considering how eagerly fans had anticipated the second season.
