National Drive-In Movie Day occurs on June 6, the anniversary of the first drive-in theatre opening in the United States. Even though many people prefer to watch movies at home or on their phones, a large number of people enjoy the tradition of driving to a park, bringing their favourite food, and viewing a movie on a large screen while snacking.
The background of National Drive-In Movie Day
The National Drive-In Film The first American drive-in theatre was opened in New Jersey by Richard M. Hollingshead Jr. on this day. The drive-in was designed for elders who had difficulty sitting comfortably in conventional movie theatres. He constructed a small drive-in theatre for his mother in his driveway and installed a large screen in his backyard using a Kodak projector mounted on his vehicle.
Later, in 1932, he used the same method to establish his first drive-in theatre, which he had patented. It had parking for 400 vehicles. The objective was to accommodate the entire family outdoors. The first film to be shown in the theatre was the well-known British comedy “Wife Beware.”
As a result of the American passion of movies, more drive-in theatres were built. In the United States, there were over 3,000 drive-ins by the late 1950s. New York was home to the largest drive-in theatre. It could fit up to 2,500 automobiles. Additionally, this drive-in had a restaurant and a playground for children. There was also an indoor seating arrangement available.
The drive-in industry capitalised on the fact that they were both convenient and romantic for families and couples. When colour television, cable television, and VCRs became prevalent in the early 1990s, drive-in theatres began to lose popularity.
