About what is Our Flag Means Death?
The comedy series Our Flag Means Death is partially based on the real-life exploits of Captain Stede Bonnet, also known as the Gentleman Pirate because he was a prosperous member of Barbados’ landed nobility before abandoning his family to pursue piracy.
Captain Bonnet and his crew struggle to survive at sea due to their lack of swashbuckling skills, at least until they encounter the notorious pirate Blackbeard, who develops romantic feelings for Stede.
Our Flag Means Death: The Complete First Season
To set the scene, the year is 1717, which was roughly during the “golden age” of piracy. In that year, a wealthy English aristocratic farmer named Stede Bonnet gave up all of his wealth and embarked on a piracy career at sea.
Bonnet received all of his desires for the majority of his existence. At middle age, he grew tired of his easy existence and set sail for a life of pillaging and plundering.
Stede knew a great deal about pirates and what they did, but he did not fully comprehend what they did for a livelihood. This is where the story begins, after Stede has assembled a peculiar crew.
Buttons is a grey-haired seaman who is always accompanied by a seagull. Lucius is a poet whose task is to chronicle Stede’s exploits as a pirate. Frenchie’s only abilities are sewing and singing while playing an improvised instrument.
The Swede is an unnamed Swedish man who seems very odd and enjoys singing despite his terrible voice. Black Pete is the most stereotypical pirate.
Our Flag Means Death: The Complete First Season
Constantly attempting to incite an uprising, he lies about being a member of the infamous pirate Blackbeard’s fleet. It is evident that Stede Bonnet is not a typical pirate, given that he is the commander of such a peculiar and unusual crew.
Rather, he is a man who wants his employees to be happy and cheerful above all else, so he promotes teamwork and enjoyable activities onboard. He has also added personal details to the ship, such as a library and walk-in closets for seasonal clothing.
However, as the days pass, the crew becomes increasingly restless. They rob impoverished fishermen with empty dinghies and have a friendly competition on board to design a flag for their ship, which is named Revenge; the winning design is displayed.
Stede and Blackbeard will become even closer over the next few weeks as Stede learns how to fight in combat. But Izzy Hands dislikes that Blackbeard is approaching Stede.
He believes that this makes Blackbeard less violent, so he instructs his commander to execute Stede during a raid in order to restore Blackbeard to his former self. Blackbeard appears to concur with the plan as he prepares to murder his host, who is unaware of the situation.
