Death of Poonam Pandey: Poonam Pandey, who made headlines in 2011 when she declared she would strip if India won the cricket World Cup, died from cervical cancer on Friday at the age of 32, her publicist said.
By the end of the day, we have not received any confirmation that the model, influencer, and sometimes actor had died, despite scouring websites and contacting individuals who may have known her. On X and Instagram, #PoonamPandey trended as messages flooded in, some shocked, others skeptical.
Does the news reflect the truth? How could a woman die at such a young age? Is the news fake? Just three days ago, she was seen on the red carpet at an event? In addition to Pandey, cervical cancer was the subject of furious discussion on social media platforms, offices, and drawing rooms.
Following Nirmala Sitharaman’s announcement in her interim budget 2024 that the government intends to focus on vaccination against cervical cancer among girls aged 9 to 14, news of Pandey’s death came a day later. Her publicist Parul Chawla announced that Pandey died last night after doctors diagnosed her with cervical cancer in her hometown in UP. She had been 32 years old.

Her knowledge of Pandey’s family or the town in Uttar Pradesh was limited. The incident began with a post on Pandey’s Instagram account in the morning.
Our family is deeply saddened to inform you that our beloved Poonam has passed away due to cervical cancer. She was a loving and compassionate person to everyone who crossed paths with her.
In this time of grief, we would appreciate your privacy while we remember her fondly for all that we shared.
Some Instagram followers doubted her when they pointed out that she was last seen in Goa only three days ago, as well as frequently before that.
Several posts about the Ram temple, the Lakshadweep-Maldives controversy, and her identity as a “Bharat citizen” were made on social media throughout January. Videos of her swimming, riding a bike, and speaking about “Bigg Boss” winner and former co-contestant Munawwar Faruqui on the reality show “Lock Upp” were also available on the website.
A public relations firm named Picture N Kraft stated in a statement, “We have received a call regarding the sudden death of her family member (as stated on her official Instagram account).” A purported email from Nikita Sharma, Pandey’s manager, confirmed that the actor had passed away from cervical cancer to several media houses. However, the phone number provided in the email was incorrect.
According to a security guard in Mumbai, he was with Pandey just two days ago. “We will have all the information by the evening,” he said.
There were reports of domestic violence against her spouse, Sam Bombay. No further information about her family is available.
Pandey’s death dominated the news cycle throughout the day, but her co-contestant Faruqui and host Kangana Ranaut expressed their condolences.
The loss of a young woman to cancer is tragic. Om Shanti,” Ranaut wrote on Instagram.
On X, Faruqui wrote, “Shocking! I cannot process the news. Poonam was a wonderful human being. Sad. RIP.”.
The television star, Karan Kundra, also expressed shock at the incident.
I couldn’t believe that Poonam had passed away! I had been in shock and disbelief for quite some time. Gone far too soon. Om Shanti. I hope her family and loved ones are doing well,” he wrote on X. Others also expressed their disbelief.
“I hope this isn’t fake news. I suspect it is fake news. Maybe someone hacked her phone or Instagram account. It is difficult to believe. I met her only about two-three months ago and you get a sense if someone is sick. There are symptoms,” Vinit Kakar, who appeared with her in “Lock Upp,” said.
Until four days ago, Poonam Pandey was fine, posting glamorous media to her Instagram account. They need to investigate if she is indeed dead. There were reports of a troubled relationship between her and her husband in the past involving the police,” states the handle, The Skin Doctor.
X stated that cervical cancer is one of the top three cancers among Indian women. “HPV vaccine prevents 97% of cervical cancers. Such a preventable loss of life. Condolences to the bereaved,” said doctor Jaison Philip.
As well as appearing in films such as “Love Poison,” “Malini & Co” and “Aa Gaya Hero,” Pandey also participated in two popular reality shows, “Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 4” in 2011 and “Lock Upp” in 2022.
When the Kolkata Knight Riders won the Indian Premier League in 2014, Pandey posted a nude photograph on her social media accounts.
The police arrested her husband and her in November 2020 for allegedly trespassing on government property in Goa and shooting an objectionable video.
She faced charges for violating COVID norms in Mumbai in May 2020.
According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), WHO’s cancer agency, cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women in India.
