Ripley Release Date: Screen adaptations of Patricia Highsmith’s novels, which follow the cunning con man who almost always manages to get away with his schemes, are nothing new. There’s also a tonne of source material because the series’ eccentric American creator penned five books, beginning in 1955 with The Talented Mr. Ripley and concluding in 1991 with Ripley Under Water. What is it about Highsmith’s world that draws performers, directors, and viewers in equal measure? Is it the allure of affluent society and the risk of succumbing to its allure? Are lovely individuals torturing one another? Call us shallow, but there are moments when it’s just enjoyable to admire flawless style in desirable settings.

Ripley Release Date

There will be eight episodes of the new series when it launches on Netflix on April 4.

Alain Delon played the lead in Purple Noon (1960), which served as the French actor’s breakthrough role. Dennis Hopper then reinterpreted the eerie character in 1977’s The American Friend. Thanks to frequent Instagram posts honouring the sepia-toned movie and the cast’s ensuing meteoric rise to fame, Anthony Minghella’s 1999 adaptation, starring Matt Damon, Jude Law, and Gwyneth Paltrow (as well as Philip Seymour-Hoffman and Cate Blanchett), is arguably the one that has been ingrained in our minds the most. Early in the new millennium, there were many more Ripleys, such as John Malkovich’s role in Ripley’s Game, but none of them truly measured up to the first few.

With Andrew Scott, recently nominated for a BAFTA for All of Us Strangers, Netflix is now offering a fresh interpretation of the beloved story. What we know about the eight-part series is as follows.

Ripley Storyline

Per Netflix’s synopsis, Tom Ripley is a “grifter” living in 1960s New York. A wealthy guy hires him to go to Italy and return his son, Dickie Greenleaf, to the United States. Sounds like wonderful employment, if you can get it. This marks the start of Ripley’s penetration into the affluent Americans’ life while they are touring Europe.

If the television adaptation stays true to the novel, Ripley’s exploits in Italy will entice you with a seductive blend of duplicity, glamour, and increasingly risky relationships. The tale will probably not be any less suspenseful even if a lot of people will already be familiar with it before the show premieres.

Steven Zaillian, who penned the Oscar-winning script for Schindler’s List and more recently the crime thriller The Night Of, which earned its main actor Riz Ahmed an Emmy, directed and authored all eight episodes of the miniseries.

Regarding the adaptation, Zaillian told Vanity Fair that Tom Ripley “is a part of our consciousness.” People are still comparing modern figures to him, over seven decades after Highsmith invented him. He refuses to leave.

Making the novel into a television series as opposed to a full-length motion picture, according to Zaillian, “allowed me to be more faithful to the story, tone, and subtleties of Highsmith’s work.”

Being a producer as well, Scott admitted to the magazine that playing Ripley was not a simple task: “It was a heavy part to play.” It was quite difficult for me both physically and mentally. That’s simply the way things are. I guess it wasn’t as difficult to understand this character as it was to understand what Tom Ripley does. It’s actually sometimes difficult to engage with the blankness, but there are some things that I can understand.

Ripley Release Date and Trailer

We’ve got an idea of what to anticipate from the series from the newly released trailer, which seems to emphasise the thriller aspects of the original work (a smart decision, in our opinion!). The show’s protagonists are seen circling about the same issue in melancholy black-and-white—some of these performers have never looked better, in fact—while pondering the same question: who is Tom Ripley?

Cast

Scott plays the main character, and Greenleaf is portrayed by British actor Johnny Flynn (Lovesick, Emma). The part of Greenleaf’s girlfriend Marge Sherwood is being taken over by Dakota Fanning. John Malkovich and musician Eliot Sumner will also perform in addition to these three main performers.
