The XX Group
The xx is a British indie rock band from London’s Wandsworth that founded in 2005. Romy Madley Croft (guitar, vocals), Oliver Sim (bass guitar, vocals), Jamie Smith, aka Jamie xx (beats, MPC, record production), and formerly Baria Qureshi (keyboard, guitar) comprise the ensemble. They are recognized for their distinctive and straightforward sound, which combines indie rock, indie electronic, indie pop, dream pop, and electro-rock. The combination of Madley Croft and Sim as vocalists distinguishes them.
Madley Croft and Sim formed the ensemble when they met at Elliott School, followed by Qureshi and Smith a year later. They garnered attention by posting their music demos on their Myspace page and were signed by the Young Turks label. Their debut album, “xx,” which was released in August 2009, was a huge success, attaining high positions on music charts and winning the 2010 Mercury Prize.
Their second album, “Coexist,” was released in 2012 to favorable reviews. After a hiatus and Smith’s solo endeavor in 2015, they released “I See You” in 2017 to critical acclaim and to the top of the UK and US music charts.
