Studio Ghibli’s Highly Anticipated Film ‘The Boy and the Heron’ Sets Release Date: GKIDS reports that The Boy and the Heron, the upcoming Studio Ghibli film, will be officially released in North America with an English dub later this year. On Friday, July 14, 2023, the film How Do You Live? was released exclusively in Japanese theatres in Japan. It received no advertising and was simultaneously released in IMAX. Hayao Miyazaki, co-founder of the studio, will write and direct the final film.

The Boy and the Heron is the official English translation of the Japanese title How Do You Live? The Child and the Heron, based on the 1937 novel by John Steinbeck, is set during World War II and follows a young boy named Cooper (known in Japan as Mahito Maki) whose mother dies as a result of the firebombing of Tokyo.

Mahito then encounters a talking heron who promises him the opportunity to see his mother again, and he embarks on a journey to uncover the meaning of life. Soma Santoki portrays the role of Mahito.

The film was both written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. His most recent work for the studio, The Wind Rises, was released in 2013. His final film for the studio is The Boy and the Heron.

14 July 2023: GKIDS Films confirms in a tweet that THE BOY AND THE HERON will be released in North American theatres in 2023-

Takeshi Honda, the animation director, is best known for Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea and the Rebuild of Evangelion film series. Joe Hisaishi, a seasoned member of Studio Ghibli, composed the score for the film. He has worked on studio productions such as Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and My Neighbour Totoro. Studio Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki is the film’s producer.
