It was one of the most successful broadcast series to premiere during the pandemic-ravaged 2020-21 television season, and it began a trend in which a famous actor (in this case, Ryan Philippe) would be promoted as the show’s protagonist, only to perish in the pilot episode.
Since the drama’s soaring first season, in which it aired 18 episodes, Big Sky’s ratings have declined significantly, making it one of the lowest-rated scripted programs on ABC this season. Along with the difficult logistics of a fourth-season drama series and allegations of on-set problems, this made the drama’s renewal a long shot heading into the upfronts.
Even so, there was an attempt to plot a course for a potential fourth season; the proposal reportedly included a creative reboot and an increase in Kelley’s day-to-day involvement.
Cassie Dewell (Bunbury), Jenny Hoyt (Winnick), and Sheriff Beau Arlen (Jensen Ackles) all use their substantial investigative skills to maintain order in Helena, Montana during Season 3, titled “Deadly Trails.”
A local backcountry excursion guided by the charismatic guide Sunny Barnes (Reba McEntire) goes awry, presenting the group with their most difficult case to date. In this scenario, no camper can be relied upon, and peril lurks behind every jagged boulder and contorted tree.
20th Television produces Big Sky in collaboration with A+E Studios. Elwood Reid is the showrunner and executive producer alongside creator Kelley. In addition, C.J. Box, Gwyneth Horder-Payton, Paul McGuigan, Matthew Gross, and Ross Fineman serve as executive producers.
