The increase in the number of participating HEIs will be a relief for many applicants who would have had to take separate exams and submit multiple applications without the expansion.
Earlier this year, the University Grants Commission urged universities to participate in the common entrance exam. The examination is obligatory for central universities (CU).
This year, in addition to the 39 CUs, 46 State Universities, 101 private deemed universities, and 10 government-funded HEIs have joined the exam.
One candidate can apply up to 20 subject areas of study and as many HEIs he/ she desires. According to a senior official of National Testing Agency, “With majority of the candidates applying for multiple subjects and are expected to take the test in those, the total number of test takers that way is expected to cross 9 lakh. The total number of unique candidates are expected to be around 5 lakh by the end of the application deadline. Already, 4.5 lakh candidates have completed the application process, including payment of the fees.”
