Jamia Faculty Imtaiyaz Hassan elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, London

Dr. Md. Imtaiyaz Hassan, Assistant Professor, Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Basic Sciences, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB), London, UK. Fellowship of the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB), is an award and fellowship granted to individuals that the Royal Society of Biology has adjudged to have made a prominent contribution to the advancement of the biological sciences.

Dr. Hassan is elected for his significant contribution to the discovery of high-affinity selective kinase inhibitors which may be employed in therapeutic management of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.

After getting Ph.D. degree in 2007 from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Gold Medallist), Dr. Hassan has moved to the Jamia Millia Islamia and started his research group to work on one of the most exciting area of functional genomics with special focus to the structure-based drug design and discovery, targeting human kinases. His research, described in more than 220 publications in the top tier journals of structural biology which has received about 3500 citations, attesting hard work, biological insight, and outstanding performance. For his excellent contribution in drug discovery, recently he was elected as Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC). Most important, he is among the few Indian scientists who has achieved such highest recognition as the fellow of both Royal Society of Chemistry and Royal Society of Biology at very young age.

Dr. Hassan has a long list of awards and honours to his credit, including Fellow of Indo- US Science and Technology Forum. He is editor of many top cited journals, organized several symposia and served on many scientific committees (VP of Indian Biophysical Society), review panels and advisory boards and given many invited lectures at national and international symposia organised by globally recognised academic and research institutions around the world.

Dr. Hassan said, “ I am delighted and truly honoured to be admitted to the Royal Society of Chemistry as well as Royal Society of Biology as a Fellow. This Fellowship is a great honour, and finally my hard work has been recognized internationally. I am grateful to my colleagues and family members who have supported and encouraged me throughout my career, and off course Jamia Millia Islamia for providing excellent infrastructure.”

Jamia fraternity and students of Dr. Hassan who are working in his lab are very happy on this development.

I’m thrilled that Dr. Hassan has been named a FRSC and FRSB,” said Professor Faizan Ahmad, former Director of Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Basic Sciences, Jamia Millia Islamia. “The designation FRSC and FRSB is only given to an internationally selected group of scientists who have made outstanding contributions to Chemistry and Biology. I congratulate Dr. Hassan for this exceptional and well-deserved honour.”
