Adlai Stevenson Day History
Adlai Stevenson was an American politician, attorney, and diplomat who was born in Los Angeles, California, on February 5, 1900. Stevenson was descended from a well-known political family in Illinois. Vice President of the United States under President Grover Cleveland was his paternal grandfather, Adlai Stevenson I. When Abraham Lincoln competed for a Senate seat in 1858, his maternal grandfather, Jesse W. Fell, managed his campaign. Apart from this remarkable lineage, Lewis Stevenson, his father, was also named Illinois Secretary of State, a position he held from 1914 until 1917.
Stevenson earned his degree in 1922 from Princeton University, where he studied literature and history. He enrolled in Harvard Law School when his father encouraged him to, but he quickly left since he thought the program was boring. But after speaking with Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. of the Supreme Court, his passion for the law was rekindled. In 1926, he graduated from Northwestern University School of Law with a law degree.
Stevenson was the US deputy delegate to the UN Preparatory Commission and a member of the committee that established the United Nations. After defeating the then-gubernatorial candidate, Dwight H. Green, Stevenson was elected governor of the state of Illinois in 1949 and held the office until 1953. He ran for president twice, in 1952 and 1956, but was unsuccessful both times. President John F. Kennedy nominated Stevenson in 1961 to be the US ambassador to the UN, a post he held until his passing on July 14, 1965.
