Alice, Lorina, and Edith were among the three daughters that Liddell brought with him. Carroll’s family would become significant figures in his life. As the family’s friendship with the author developed, he would take the children on multiple Thames River rowing excursions. Carroll, who was renowned in the literary world at the time, entertained the young ladies by telling them a story about a girl named Alice. The girls adored the story so much that they asked Carroll to narrate it on every journey. Alice Liddell received “Alice in Wonderland” as a Christmas gift from Lewis Carroll in 1864. The following year, he published the book himself. He also added the characters Lorina and Edith as Lory and Eaglet. In the following years, Carroll would introduce characters such as the Mad Hatter and the Cheshire Cat to the book.
