All Saints Day (Colombia) 2023: History

Christian communities observe All Saints’ Day, alternatively referred to as the Feast of All Saints, as a religious public holiday on the Monday following November 1. Within the nation of Colombia. All Saints’ Day originated in the fourth century as a Greek Christian tradition. All Saints’ Day was first documented on May 13, 609 A.D., when Pope Boniface IV received the Pantheon in Rome as a gift from Emperor Phocas. The day was designated a holiday by the Pope in observance of all martyrs and the Blessed Virgin Mary. The celebration underwent an enlargement during the pontificate of Gregory III, reaching November 1, and incorporated the observance of all saints, including those whose sainthood is revealed exclusively to God.

It is possible that the date of the holiday was altered to accommodate Samhain, an ancient pagan celebration honoring the deceased. Before Samhain, it is said that malevolent spirits prowled the countryside in search of humans, compelling individuals to disguise themselves as animals in an attempt to deceive the spirits. Although the pagan narrative endured the Reformation, it was tagged by Protestants as All Souls’ Day, an observance that transpires on November 2. Despite the prohibition by the church in 1770, a number of congregations continue to observe the holiday on the initial Sunday of November.

On November 1, Catholics are strongly encouraged to attend services. Observance of the feast involves reciting the Beatitudes, which are eight privileges cited by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount, which is recorded in the Gospel of Matthew. Additionally, churches have begun to commemorate those who have passed away during the course of the year by instituting the tradition of lighting candles on graves the evening before All Saints’ Eve.
