Even though they were not officially acknowledged by the Catholic Church, certain people may have been regarded as saints by the Lord for leading moral lives.
All Saints Day (Spain) 2023: On November 1, we mark All Saints Day. In Spain, it is also referred to as Todos Los Santos. All Saints’ Day is a Christian solemnity observed in honor of all known and unidentified saints of the church. It is also often known as All Hallows’ Day, the Feast of All Saints, the Feast of All Hallows, the Sacredness of All Saints, and Hallowmas. A Christian celebration called All Saints Day honors every saint who has lived throughout Christian history. The Methodist Church, the Lutheran Church, the Roman Catholic Church, and other Protestant churches all observe it on November 1. On the first Sunday following Pentecost, the Eastern Orthodox Church and its affiliated Eastern Catholic churches celebrate All Saints Day.
Annually, November 1 is designated as All Saints Day. It might have started as a feast honoring saints and martyrs on the Sunday immediately following Pentecost in the fourth century, which was a Greek Christian tradition. May 13, 609, was the first recorded All Saints Day, shortly before Pope Boniface IV accepted the Pantheon, a gift from Emperor Phocas, in Rome. In honor of all martyrs and the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Pope declared the day to be a holiday. The celebration was shifted to November 1 and extended to include the saints as well as those for whom sainthood is only acknowledged by God during Pope Gregory III’s pontificate in 835.
Most likely, the date was picked on purpose to replace Samhain, the traditional feast of the dead. The night before Samhain, evil spirits prowled the earth, looking for people to devour. To frighten the spirits, locals would costume as various monsters. Following November 1’s conversion to a Christian feast, this tradition persisted, giving rise to the term “Halloween,” which is a shortened version of All Hallows’ Eve. Despite being combined with All Souls’ Day on November 2 by the Protestants, the day did survive the Reform movement. Although the day was abandoned as a church holiday in 1770, it is still celebrated on the first Sunday in November in many parishes.
In Roman Catholicism, All Saints Day is a Holy Day of Commitment. This means that unless they have a good reason—like being ill—Catholics are required to attend Mass on the designated date. If November 1 falls on a Monday or a Saturday that is close to the Sunday sabbath, Catholics are urged to attend mass, but it is not mandatory. The Beatitudes, an account of the eight benefits that Jesus bestowed during his Sermon on the Mount, are recited aloud on this occasion every year according to Matthew’s Gospel. Many churches have started remembering everyone who passed away during the year on the actual day in recent years. Moreover, some individuals light candles on graves on All Saints Eve evening.
Observing this day contributes to our spiritual growth. We become more spiritually aware when we observe how someone lives their life in spite of adversity.
On days such as these, we usually look into it more. Learning more about the majority of saints—Saint Paul, Saint James, Saint Peter, and others—is a fulfilling experience since knowledge is never wasted.
A holiday such as All Saints Day brings attention to the good deeds people perform for others. Even though very few individuals possess the saints’ abilities, it is crucial to acknowledge those who do and to constantly remind ourselves that we ought to strive to be like them.
