A.K.A. was founded on January 15, 1908, at Howard University. It was the result of a black woman’s goal of creating a network of support for other female black college students, one that would enable them to live and learn successfully in a convoluted, unjust, and racist academic environment. Ethel Hedgeman established the first black female Greek-letter sorority at Howard University as a result of her fight for freedom for other black college students.
