Alpha Kappa Alpha Day, celebrated annually on January 15th, is the nation's first black female sorority founded on January 15, 1908, at Howard University. The sority, which has over 300,000 members in the United States and other countries, has a rich history of shattering records and hosting numerous outstanding black women.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Day 2024: Since the sorority’s founding more than a century ago, January 15 has been the yearly date of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Day celebration. As the nation’s first black female sorority, it holds the distinction of hosting numerous outstanding black women. Although it faces competition, its members are remarkable. Did you know that Kamala Harris is an A.K.A. sister? She was the first black woman to hold the position of vice president in the United States. Alpha Kappa Alpha Day’s history

Since the early 1900s, January 15 has been observed as Alpha Kappa Alpha Day annually. The history of this particular celebration comes after the sorority’s founding narrative. It has been observed on this day every year for more than a century.

A.K.A. was founded on January 15, 1908, at Howard University. It was the result of a black woman’s goal of creating a network of support for other female black college students, one that would enable them to live and learn successfully in a convoluted, unjust, and racist academic environment. Ethel Hedgeman established the first black female Greek-letter sorority at Howard University as a result of her fight for freedom for other black college students.

Even if there were other female sororities before and after A.K.A., its rich history sets it apart from the others. It was, on the one hand, the first sorority that black female college students in the country could identify with. However, it has a history of shattering records. It currently has over 300,000 members in the United States and other nations.

Among the many illustrious A.K.A. alumni is the well-known black poet Maya Angelou, whose 1969 book “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” The 20th-century activist Martin Luther King Jr.’s wife, Coretta Scott-King; Rosa Parks; Phylicia Rashad; Katherine G. Johnson, and numerous others. The only female Greek-letter sorority to produce a vice president was A.K.A. in 2021. As the sole female occupant of the White House’s second-highest seat, Kamala Harris possesses a unique distinction. The sorority is well-known not only in the United States but also in South Africa, Canada, Japan, Germany, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, Liberia, Nigeria, and many other countries, thanks to these and many other accomplishments made by the sisters of A.K.A.
