American Immigration Lawyers Association Day of Action 2023: Date, History, Facts about Immigration

The American Immigration Lawyers Association observes Day of Action on April 27. The American Immigration Lawyers Association (A.I.L.A.) was founded to protect the integrity of the immigration system because immigrants have a significant impact on the socioeconomic environment.

A.I.L.A. is an association of immigration law practitioners and educators. A.I.L.A. organises an annual National Day of Action to advocate for improved immigration laws. The American Immigration Lawyers Association Day of Action aims to educate members of congress on the problems afflicting the immigration system so that they can reduce bureaucracy and improve the nation’s infrastructure supporting immigrants.

The background of American Immigration Lawyers Association Day

On October 14, 1946, the American Immigration Lawyers Association was established. The organisation was formerly known as the Association of Immigration and Nationality Lawyers. When the organisation was founded, there were only 19 members from Manhattan, New York; today, there are 15,000 members from across the country. Currently, A.I.L.A. is headquartered in Washington, D.C.

A.I.L.A. members support families seeking to immigrate to the United States. As a non-profit organisation, the majority of these cases are handled pro bono for athletes, entertainers, students, and asylum-seeking immigrants.

The A.I.L.A. is divided into smaller ‘chapters’ for more efficient administration and communication. There are fifty national committees and forty-nine chapters.

In 1996, the National Day of Action was established. A.I.L.A.’s primary objective with National Day of Action has been to improve the immigration system by enacting legislation to ensure enduring change and create sustainable immigration benefits that serve both the nation and immigrants. Their other objective is to rehabilitate and reform the immigrant court in order to assure comprehensive, just, and humane enforcement.

This event is open to new and experienced immigration law practitioners, professors, members of Congress, and legislative and administrative representatives.

For a nation with a 14% immigrant population (approximately 45 million people), just and inclusive immigrant laws are of the utmost importance.
