American Painters Day History
American Painters Day honors the nation’s most prolific painters, who are renowned for their incredible body of work. But today, Norman Rockwell, the illustrator, is given more credit. Rockwell became well-known for his overly realistic depictions of reality in his artwork. His covers that appeared in the weekly Saturday Evening Post helped him become well-known during the 20th century. Over his life, he recorded about 300 covers of them. In addition, the artist received praise and recognition for his insightful illustrations that made observations about World War II. His primary focus was on portraying the American way of life.
The main reason Rockwell is so well-known is due of the artistic achievements he produced throughout his lifetime. At the age of fourteen, he was enrolled in lessons at the New York School of the Arts. In addition, he dropped out of high school to attend the National Academy of Design. It is uncommon for someone to become passionate about their career at such an early age, and it shows how committed they are to realizing their goals.
Rockwell was able to gain notoriety early on because he got started early. When he was barely out of his teens, he was employed as the art director of “Boy’s Life” and has drawn Christmas cards. When Rockwell painted his first “Saturday Evening Post” cover in 1916, he was just 22 years old. The artist continued to produce work over the years that astounded the entire nation. Additionally, his work attracted attention from throughout the world and elevated American art once more. In 1977, Norman Rockwell was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
