The background of Amun Jadid

The majority of Muslims commemorate the beginning of the Islamic year on the first day of the month of Muharram. Islam is the second-largest religion in the globe, with approximately 1.8 billion adherents. Its origins date to the seventh century, making it the youngest of the main world religions. Islam began in Mecca with the prophet Muhammad.

In the Islamic calendar, a year consists of 12 months and lasts approximately 354 days. The first month of the year is Muharram, which is known as the month of remembrance. Additionally, it is regarded the holiest month. Each month begins with the appearance of the new moon. The days of each month alternate between 30 and 29 days, with the exception of the 12th, known as Dh al-ijjah, whose length varies on a 30-year cycle to maintain the calendar in sync with the actual phases of the moon.

Most Muslims observe Muharram in the belief that it commemorates two significant Islamic events that characterise Muslim practises and traditions: the day Moses liberated his people from Egypt and the day Imam Hussein bin Ali was assassinated. On Muharram, Shia Muslims lament Imam Hussein’s demise. For Sunnis, however, it is a day of optimism and gratitude for the gift of liberty.

Muslims perform prayers and rituals on the day of Amon Jadeed. In addition, they observe fasting, which represents discipline and self-control rather than individual gratification. During the duration of the fast, Muslims will abstain from certain provisions that the Quran otherwise permits, including eating, drinking, and sexual activity.
