Americans celebrate Analog to Digital Television Day annually on February 17. It is an unofficial holiday commemorating the transition from analogue to digital television broadcasts. Analog televisions are the earliest type of television technology, in which images and sounds are manipulated through the manipulation of electromagnetic waves and frequencies. Less than a decade after the introduction of digital televisions, European countries took the initiative and initiated their transition programmes. Germany shut down its terrestrial analogue transition signal in 2003, while Luxembourg became the first country to completely switch from terrestrial analogue to digital broadcasting in 2006. The United Kingdom began its transition a year after Luxembourg established this enviable example. In the United States, the transition date was originally set for February 17, 2009, which is the origin of Analog to Digital Television Day on February 17. Due to the D.T.V. Delay Act, which delayed the mandatory analogue cutoff date, it was pushed back to June 12, when all stations across the country stopped transmitting analogue signals.

Although impressive progress has been made since the transition programme began in 2009 in more than 48 states, the complete transition from analogue to digital television broadcast in the United States was not completed until January 2022, when Alaska, which had been granted a transitioning extension for a variety of reasons, completed their transition.
