Anniversary of Benazir Bhutto’s death: History

In addition to serving as the Pakistan Peoples Party’s chair, Benazir Bhutto was the country’s previous prime minister. Given that her father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, was also Pakistan’s prime minister, she was raised in a political household. But a military revolution overthrew him, and he was hung for a crime he had not committed. Bhutto was thrown into exile upon his passing, and she didn’t return to Pakistan until 1986. Upon her return, she discovered that the country had not overlooked her. Her convoy took nine and a half hours to travel the eight miles to a rally venue in Lahore because of the enormous crowds that met her at the airport.

After that, Pervez Musharraf, a military dictator, expelled Bhutto from Pakistan in the late 1990s after she served as prime minister for two terms. Bhutto returned to Pakistan following the fall of the dictatorship, and in 2006 she became a member of the Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy. While talks were taking place between the military government and various political figures, Bhutto persisted in organizing protests for her followers throughout Pakistan.

A suicide bomber interrupted one of these demonstrations on October 19, 2007, murdering 139 of her fans in the process. Bhutto withstood the assault. Her good fortune, though, was short-lived as on December 27, 2007, she was attacked once more at a rally. Three gunshots were heard as Bhutto was waving to supporters through the sunroof of her car. There was an explosion after the attack. On the way to the hospital, Bhutto passed away.
