Anniversary of the Liberation of the Battle of Manila 2024: Every year on February 3, people celebrate the anniversary of the Battle of Manila’s liberation. During the 1944–1945 Philippine campaign, it was a crucial fight. It was fought against Japanese invaders in Manila, the capital of the Philippines, by American and Filipino forces. The city was destroyed during the month-long fighting, and around 100,000 people perished. Japanese forces killed Filipino citizens, and American artillery also claimed many lives during the conflict.
American gunfire and Japanese resistance destroyed the majority of Manila’s architectural and cultural heritage. Berlin, Warsaw, and Manila were among the three most devastated capital cities during the conflict. The Japanese military occupation of the Philippines (1942–1945) came to an end as a result of the battle. For General Douglas MacArthur to successfully conduct his reconquest operations, Manila had to be taken.
Over 100,000 Filipino nationals lost their lives in the American-Japanese conflict over Manila. The most deadly urban battles occurred during the Pacific War on small, sparsely populated islands and in the Pacific.
American forces swiftly seized control of Luzon, extending from Manila to the mountainous north. The Imperial Japanese Army’s commander, Tomoyuki Yamashita, protected the city from the north. On February 3, 1945, army forces advanced into the outskirts of the city. A brief ceasefire between American and Japanese forces was achieved at a neighboring university that was converted into a prisoner-of-war camp, providing a brief reprieve for both the prisoners and the Japanese soldiers manning them.
On February 5, American forces moved into deeply entrenched Japanese areas of the city. But as the Japanese defenders grew more resolute, MacArthur eased his limitations on artillery and aerial bombardment. On February 6, MacArthur declared victory, although the Japanese still controlled a large portion of Manila. When Japanese forces tented out in the city, frequently in buildings from the 17th century, things swiftly got worse. They instantly lost all discipline and coherence and started killing Filipino residents in large numbers as payback.
For the following three weeks, massive artillery bombardments and hand-to-hand fighting devastated the city’s oldest sections. Many old buildings were damaged by the fighting and artillery barrages. The Japanese used civilians as human shields and committed horrifying murders against them, including attacks on Germans living in towns where they were co-belligerents. In March, organized Japanese resistance came to an end.
