The Philippines celebrate Apolinario Mabini Day annually on July 23. Apolinario Mabini was born on July 23 in Tanuan, Batangas, Philippines as a Filipino National Hero. He is well-known as the theorist and spokesperson of the Philippine Revolution. He was the revolutionary government’s advisor and is also referred to as “the brains of the revolution.” Although he lost the use of his legs due to polio, he played a crucial role in the fight for independence. He was the country’s prime minister, foreign minister, and helped compose the constitution.
Apolinario Mabini was born in the city of Tanuan, Batangas, on July 23, 1864. His birth was into an impoverished family. His father, Ignacio Mabini, was a farmer, while his mother, Dionisia Maranan, was a market vender. There were eight of them. Mabini exhibited intelligence and a strong desire to learn and study from a young age. As it was difficult for his family to pay for his education, Mabini began labouring to finance his own education.
In 1881, he was awarded a partial scholarship to Colegio de San Juan de Letran in Manila. He was recognised as a Latin professor in 1887. After that, he studied law at the University of Santo Tomas. He obtained a law degree in 1894. He contracted polio in 1896, which paralysed his legs. Consequently, he is also referred to as the “Sublime Paralytic.” According to legend, his disability saved his life that autumn. The colonial police detained Mabini in October 1896 for his participation in the reform movement. The colonial government summarily executed José Rizal, another participant in the Philippines Revolution, on December 30, 1896, while he was still under house arrest at the San Juan de Dios Hospital. It is believed that Mabini’s polio prevented him from experiencing the same fate.
Apolinario was able to persuade the new president, Emilio Aguinaldo, to establish a revolutionary government with an assembly in 1898. The following year, he was appointed both prime minister and foreign minister of the country. He drafted the constitution for the brief 1898-1899 republic. Mabini perished on May 13, 1903, in Manila.
