Arrival Of First Missionaries 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

Missionaries have existed in the world for decades, and their primary objective is to spread the Christian message.

Arrival of the First Missionaries Day is observed annually on March 5 to honour the contributions of missionaries to the spread of Christianity. According to history, these missionaries began their work in New Zealand in 1814 and frequently travelled to other nations for religious purposes. These missionaries were influential because they were well-educated and chose nonviolent means to propagate Christianity. In fact, a few of them were also educators. The arrival of these missionaries into the region is commemorated annually due to their devotion.

The background of Arrival Of The First Missionaries

Missionaries have existed in the world for decades, and their primary objective is to spread the Christian message. There was a time when missionaries were among the most influential members of society; however, this is no longer the case. Samuel Marsden was among the first English missionaries to arrive in the Bay of Islands in 1814. However, Marsden was not alone. He arrived alongside a regional chief and other missionaries. William Hall, John King, Thomas Kendall, and Thomas Hansen were among them.

Marsden began teaching the Mori of mainland New Zealand agricultural skills upon his arrival. This was his strategy for encouraging people to convert, and it proved effective. Not only did the population conceal themselves, but the land’s agriculture also flourished.

The Mori missionaries subsequently shifted their focus to the Ngpuhi, who frequently captured slaves. The Mori missionaries ensured that the slaves were liberated, thereby earning their lives and devotion to Christianity — the faith that had granted them their freedom. The Ngti Porou slave Piripi Taumata—Kura also travelled to the East Coast to preach Christianity as a missionary. He taught the people of Te ti Awa to read and write and constructed the community’s first Christian church. Despite the fact that the majority of New Zealand missionaries worked with Mori communities, many also travelled abroad to spread their message. There were even missionaries in China and South America.
