On the fourth full weekend of June each year, thousands of amateur radio devotees from the United States and Canada set up temporary communications stations and make contact with like-minded individuals during ARRL Field Day. The background of ARRL Field Day

On the second Saturday of June 1933, the first ARRL Field Day was conducted. The competition was won by the W4PAW team, which scored 1876 points. Due to World War II, Field Day was not observed from 1942 to 1945.

Field Day’s competition, a high-frequency dash to establish contact with as many stations as possible, is a major draw for many. The rules stipulate that if setup begins before the contest begins, participants have 24 hours to pursue their contacts, while those who began setup after the contest began have 27 hours. In 1968, the rules were changed and everyone was required to set up within a 27-hour window, but the change proved controversial, and in 1969, the rules were readjusted to their current form.

Each station will share information with the other stations. For the North American Field Day, the exchange consists of the station call sign; the name of the ARRL-recognized section from which the station is operating (called Grid Square); and a class designator which indicates the type of location (whether in a vehicle, outdoors, or a home), the number of people operating and number of transmitters being used, as well as information about the type of electrical power source connected to (conventional or emergency sources like batte or generator). The event is now sponsored by the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) on a large scale and has begun to expand to many countries abroad.

The competition element of Field Day serves two functions: The primary objective is to evaluate the group’s ability to plan operations that can be effective for a full twenty-four hours, including operator endurance and sufficient numbers of operators for a shift operation. The secondary objective is to demonstrate the technical proficiency of the station, which was constructed rapidly for the contacts. Theoretically, a superior station will be able to conduct emergency operations in dire conditions and will be able to make more contacts during the competition portion of Field Day. Point systems are designed to incentivize emergency preparedness activities, such as designating a station safety officer or incorporating auxiliary power capabilities.

Although many amateur radio devotees strive to win their entry category in the contest, the social aspect of the event has also grown over the years. Camping and cookouts are prevalent, and radio stations are kept on the air through a system of rotating shifts.

Field Day is frequently used to attract significant attention to amateur radio, and some clubs demonstrate technologies such as single-sideband voice, Morse code, older and new digital modes alike (including RTTY, PSK31, and FT8, among others), and even two-way communication via amateur radio satellite.
