Asom Divas: History

Asom Divas, sometimes called Asom Day or Sukapha Divas, honors the first king of the Ahom country in Assam and marks the day he came to the area in the early 1300s.

Chaolung Sukapha was a prince from the Tai state of Mong Mao, which is near Ruili in Yunnan, China. He had to move because the birth of a cousin got in the way of him taking over his father’s throne. He made the trip for 13 years and crossed the Patkai mountains. When he got to Namrup, which is in the southeast of the Indian state of Assam, in 1228, he started the Ahom kingdom.

People think that Sukapha’s time as king of the Ahom kingdom, when he ruled Assam in the Middle Ages for 600 years and famously fought off other great powers like the Mughals, was a wonderful time in the history of Assam.

He got along well with the tribal groups that lived in Assam when he first came there, which is why many people call him the creator of “Bor Asom” or “greater Assam.” People looked up to him as a strong, brave, and bold leader who did a lot to bring together Assam’s different ethnic groups.

Asom Divas, the day that honors his memory, shows off Assam’s rich culture! At the start of the party, local artists play beautiful folk music and perform native dances such as the Bagurumba, the Bihu dance, and the Bhortal dance. There is a sizable parade that the authorities organize after the awards ceremony.
