Bandana Day 2023: Bandana Day is held on the last Friday of October, which is October 27 this year. It’s a way to honor people with cancer by bringing attention to and support for those who wear the item. Why use bandanas? Cancer treatments like chemotherapy and strong anticancer drugs can cause a lot of hair loss, so many people cover their heads with things like bandanas.

WHAT BANDANA DAY IS ALL ABOUT

“Badhnati” or “Badnahati,” which means “to tie,” is thought to be where the word “bandana” comes from. Its past starts in the late 1600s in South Asia and the Middle East. By the 18th century, trade with the Far East had grown, and the bandana quickly spread to the West. A lot of women loved the wool bandanas that the Dutch East India Company got from India. As demand grew, prices went up until only wealthy people could buy them. Soon, England and Scotland joined the business and made their own bandanas that looked like shawls. Once they got to Portugal, they were called “bandanoe” before they were finally called “bandana.” Over the years, the patterns have also changed with each new society and country they were brought to.

In America, the bandana became popular because of Martha Washington, George Washington’s wife. John Hewson was a revolutionary printmaker who Martha met by chance. She showed him drawings of militia flags and guns with the hope that he could print them. The next year, the Washingtons got a package from Hewson that they didn’t expect. It had a cloth picture of General Washington riding a horse inside. This is how the bandana got to the American states. Since then, the bandana has been used for political reasons, and later for many social and personal reasons, such as by many cancer patients going through chemotherapy as a visual aid.

Doctors call these side effects “hair adverse events.” They are very common with cancer medicines and can also lower the quality of life. It has been seen that people of all ages have psychological and social responses to hair loss. Cancer patients polled said that losing their hair was the worst thing about chemotherapy. About 8% of those patients said they would not go through chemotherapy at all if they could avoid it just because of the hair loss. When kids lose their hair, they often feel alone and isolated. There is a light coming from this truth. They are now wearing bandanas, which cover their heads and make them look (and feel) a little better.

Bandana Day’s origins and history are still unknown, but CanTeen, an Australian charity that raises money for charitable causes, is believed to have created it. Bandana Day is held every year to bring attention to and encourage support for young people with cancer.
