The background of Benito Juarez Birthday Memorial

Benito Pablo Juárez Garca was a celebrated figure and national icon in Mexico. He is honored annually for his contributions to the lives of the Mexican people. Juárez was born in San Pablo Guelatao, Oaxaca, on March 21, 1806. He began his career as an attorney and advanced to the positions of state legislator, civil magistrate, government secretary, and governor. On January 15, 1858, he was elected president of Mexico and became known for his reforms. He was the first indigenous president of Mexico and postcolonial America because he was a Zapotec.

Juárez was committed to the development of democracy, worked to reduce the influence of the Catholic Church in Mexican politics, and fought tirelessly for the rights of indigenous people. In 1853, due to political conflicts, he was exiled to the United States. The following year, he assisted in the promulgation of “Plan de Ayutla,” which ended the dictatorship of political leader Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and established a new Constitutional Congress.

In 1857, Juárez was appointed president of the Supreme Court of Justice, a position he held until he was elected president in 1858. Until his demise in 1872, he served as president of Mexico during such historic events as the Reform War, the French Intervention, the Second Empire, and the restoration of the republic. By resisting French occupation of Mexico, Juárez also succeeded in overthrowing the Second Mexican Empire and reestablishing the Mexican Republic. The modernization of the country was the result of his extraordinary generosity for the time period.
