There are annual traditions, such as memorial services for the departed soldiers. This day is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the rich history of the Battle of Bennington and why it is regarded as a pivotal event in the 18th century.

The background of Bennington Battle Day

In July of 1777, British forces commanded by General John Burgoyne captured Fort Ticonderoga and Mount Independence, marking the beginning of the Battle of Bennington. Their objective was to separate New England from the remaining colonies. General Burgoyne dispatched German lieutenant colonel Friedrich Baum and an armed force of 800 men to pillage Vermont and plunder food supplies in Bennington on August 9. This formidable raiding party defeated the American militia commanded by Vermont Brigadier-General John Stark on August 14. However, the conflict did not end there. Two days later, the American New Hampshire militia regrouped and grew in size in preparation for the decisive battle.

The Battle of Bennington was contested on August 16 in Walloomsac, New York, approximately ten miles northwest of Bennington. It marked the beginning of the Saratoga Campaign and was the decisive battle of the conflict. Even though the battle was fought in New York, it was known as the “Bennington Battle” because the British Army was on its way to Bennington, Vermont, to steal military supplies and ammunition. Due to their superior preparation this time, the Americans defeated the British and won the battle. At least 700 British personnel were taken prisoner, while 207 died.

However, the Americans also suffered 30 fatalities and 42 injuries. This victory marked a pivotal turning point in the American Revolutionary War and bolstered their morale, which contributed significantly to their victory at the Battle of Saratoga and the defeat of General Burgoyne.

In 1887, a 306-foot monument was erected in Old Bennington Village to commemorate the American victory and honour the fallen servicemen. It was completed in November 1889 and remains a notable landmark to this day.
