Big Garden Birdwatch 2024: Every year, the Big Garden Birdwatch takes place on the final weekend of January. We’ll walk you through the finest ways to observe the watch this year. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, or R.S.P.B., was founded more than a century ago. In the UK, Big Garden Birdwatch promotes the need to protect endangered species, particularly birds. Often, humans drive these species out of their native habitats. Participants are encouraged to count and monitor the birds in their gardens as part of the Big Garden Birdwatch.

Big Garden Birdwatch History

Emily Williamson established the Society for the Protection of Birds (S.P.B.) in 1889 intending to prevent the extinction of animals and birds. Emily thought that the British Ornithologists Union was not dedicating enough time or attention to the issue of bird protection and that they were not doing a sufficient job of protecting the birds. After that, Emily started the S.P.B., an all-woman organization dedicated to the welfare and conservation of birds.

The S.P.B. was granted royal status in 1904, marking the establishment of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (R.S.P.B.). Its effective battle to safeguard ecosystems began in 1921 with the passage of the Importation of Plumage Act. In 1930, the R.S.P.B. purchased its first natural reserve; currently, it possesses over 200 natural reserves located throughout the United Kingdom.

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds established the Young Ornithologists Club in 1965 to encourage youth and young people to get involved in the movement to save birds and other species. Big Schools Birdwatch, a version of the Big Garden Birdwatch, was introduced in British schools in 1979. In 1993, the R.S.P.B. partnered with BirdLife International, and by 1997, the organization had over one million members.

To increase public awareness and safeguard the lives of birds, animals, and their natural habitat, the Big Garden Birdwatch project was established in the United Kingdom in 1998. Every year in January, hundreds of British individuals register to participate in this drive, which is held in celebration of this occasion. After that, the R.S.P.B. gives participants the required materials and instructions. Some species to watch out for are magpies, robins, and house sparrows.
