The Manlilikha ng Bayan Masino Intaray Birth Anniversary is observed on April 10. In 1993, Masino Intaray, a native of Palawan, was awarded the Gawad ng Maharlika ng Bayan or Living National Treasure Award. This was in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the Philippine performing arts and literature.
The Palawan people of Southern Palawan’s highlands are one of the most prominent indigenous cultural groups in Palawan, Philippines. They believe that the earth, sky, and ocean, as well as other natural elements, pertain to no one. Their fundamental social value is sharing. Rituals such as the ‘tambilaw’ and the ‘tinapay’ involve the exchange of food, drinks, talents, and ideas. The ‘tambilaw’ is a ritual offering to Ampo’t Paray, the deity of rice, involving the communal preparation and distribution of rice. Tinapay is the ceremony of imbibing rice wine. The ‘basal’ or gong music ensemble performs a significant role during these special occasions. The melody of the basal connects them spiritually to the Great Lord Ampo. The basal and the rice wine enliven the night. It brings visitors together under one roof, the “kolon banwa,” which is a large house that can accommodate approximately 100 people.
Masino Itaray is from this community that is entwined with nature. He was a master of the ‘basal’ and ‘kulilal,’ a lyrical composition accompanied by a lute and zither. He was a skilled ‘bagit’ player, which is an instrument that depicts the rhythms, movements, and noises of nature. He was a skilled performer of the aroding (mouth harp) and babarak (ring flute). In addition to being a prolific poet, he was exceptionally well-versed in oral traditions such as’sudsungit’ or narratives, ‘tutul’ or epics, and ‘tuturan’ or myths of teachings and ancestor origins. He possessed intellectual clarity, a creative memory, and spiritual purpose. This allowed him to chant countless epics and stories over the course of many consecutive evenings.
His contributions to the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines linger on, and he is remembered for his enduring legacy.
