His sole formal education at the Manila School of Arts and Trades ended when he reached fifteen, so he learnt how to sculpt on his own.

Although Abueva was raised in Bohol, he was born on January 26, 1930, in Manila. The stunning wooden sculptures he amazed his brothers and friends with were evidence of his early artistic interests. He started his flourishing artistic career in the 1950s. As a “Pura Villanueva-Kalaw Scholar,” he enrolled in the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts in 1950 and studied under National Artist Guillermo Tolentino.

Abueva was already taking home prizes in painting competitions organized by the painting Association of the Philippines while he was a student at U.P. He won first place in the 1951 AAP Semi-Annual Competition and first place in the 1952 AAP Annual Art Competition. He earned a Smith-Mundt fellowship and a Fulbright Travel Grant while attending the Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he completed his studies in 1955.

Abueva studied at Harvard University during the summers after completing a doctoral program there at the University of Kansas. His numerous outstanding pieces that have influenced the development of contemporary Philippine sculpture demonstrate how his training allowed him to be proficient in both classical and abstract representation. The youngest recipient of the National Artist for Sculpture prize, he received it in 1976. Abueva created a great deal of art up until his death on February 16, 2018, because of his talent and commitment.
