Annually, Don Luis Muoz Rivera’s birthday is celebrated on July 18. Rivera was a Puerto Rican poet, journalist, and politician who lived from July 17, 1859 until November 11, 1916. While Puerto Rico was still a part of Spain, he played a crucial role in the struggle for its political independence. In 1887, Rivera joined the newly formed Autonomist Party’s leadership. In 1889, he was a successful candidate for the position of Caguas district delegate. Later, Rivera joined a group established by the party to discuss autonomy proposals with Práxedes Mateo Sagasta, who would later grant Puerto Rico an autonomous government following his election. He served as the Chief of Cabinet.
Luis Muoz Rivera was born into one of Puerto Rico’s oldest patriarchal political families.
As a youth, Rivera lived in a modest rural community called Barranquitas. His mother educated him at home until he was ten years old. He was educated in French and Spanish and studied music with Jorge Colombani. His father retained private tutors to continue his education.
Rivera started writing poetry at a tender age, but he did not begin publishing his work until he was 23 years old. The poem ‘Adelante!’ was published in 1882 by Mario Braschi, an editor for the newspaper “El Pueblo.” Braschi advised Rivera to continue writing about politics and science instead of love poetry. Thus, Rivera began writing about the political situation in Puerto Rico and advocating for an independent government.
Although his father was a supporter of the Conservative Party, Rivera joined the Liberal Party in 1883 to support his relative Vicente Muoz Barrios’s political beliefs. Rivera opened a store on Quintán Negrón Sanjurjo while employed by the corporation, but it was not very successful. He received the backing of the Liberal Party, was selected to head the Barranquitas committee, and was elected to the municipal council. In 1885, Rivera unsuccessfully sought election to the Provincial Assembly to represent the Juana Diaz district.
