The background of Bonaire Flag Day

To learn the background of Bonaire Flag Day, we must travel through time. The first inhabitants of Bonaire island were Arawak Indians from neighbouring Venezuela. According to researchers, Bonaire has been inhabited since the year 1000 A.D.

In 1499, when the Spanish Empire claimed the island, this changed. Alonso de Ojeda and Amerigo Vespucci claimed Bonaire for the Spanish Empire upon their arrival. For over a century, the Spanish governed the island. In 1636, however, the Dutch took possession of the island after winning an 80-year war known as the ‘Time of Confusion.’

Not only the Dutch but also the Spanish fought for control of the island of Bonaire. Other nations and individuals occupying the island fought for the identical objective. In 1816, Bonaire reverted to its Dutch status after several years of disarray and turmoil during which the island’s constitution took on several different forms.

The Bonaire emblem was designed in 1981. Whitney Smith, an American vexillologist, was one of the notable designers of the Bonaire Flag. On a rectangular base, the flag consists of two triangles separated by a diagonal white stripe. The larger, blue triangle is in the lower right corner, while the smaller, yellow triangle is in the upper left. The remaining portion of the centre is white.

Inside the white stripe is a red six-pointed star and a black compass. The compass represents the inhabitants of Bonaire. It signifies that the island is inhabited by people from all four corners of the globe. The six vertices of the star represent the first six settlements established on the island.

Bonaire Flag Day is traditionally observed on the date that European explorers first landed on the island.
