Botswana Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Celebrations

According to historical records, communities from the northeast and advancing Dutch Boer farmers from the south and east attacked and threatened Tswana people residing in this region at the end of the 19th century.

Botswana Day is annually observed on September 30. Under normal circumstances, the citizens of Botswana will fill stadiums to learn about the nation’s victory over the British under the command of the late Sir Seretse Khama, the father of the nation’s former president Ian Khama. Botswana, formerly known as Bechuanaland during the colonial era, is now referred to by the name of its predominant ethnic group, the Tswana. Since gaining independence, Botswana has gained international renown as a peaceful and growing prosperous democratic state. During this time, many residents of this southern African nation visit family and friends to celebrate the national holiday.

The background of Botswana Day

According to historical records, communities from the northeast and advancing Dutch Boer farmers from the south and east attacked and threatened Tswana people residing in this region at the end of the 19th century. Khama III, Bathoen, and Sebele made an appeal to the British government for assistance in combating these threats. On March 31, 1885, the British placed the northern section of the area, known as Bechuanaland — the term derives from an English version of the Tswana phrase ‘Land of the Tswana,’ under their protection.

In 1910, the Union of South Africa was founded by the region’s main British colonies. It was anticipated that Bechuanaland would eventually join the union. This was never implemented, however. On the other hand, the regional tribal chief opposed joining the union because he believed it would be detrimental to his people. His advocacy was successful, and as a consequence, the British were unable to transfer the territory to South Africa. 1948 saw the establishment of apartheid in South Africa, extinguishing any prospect of integration into the country.

Due to the effects of the Second World War and a growing yearning for independence, Britain began the process of reducing its colonies, including those in Africa. This procedure was concluded by the end of World War II. In 1964, the United Kingdom approved proposals for Botswana’s transition to self-government. A new constitution was adopted on September 30, 1966, paving the way for the country’s first general elections, which resulted in the country’s independence. Seretse Khama was elected to his position after playing a pivotal role in the independence movement.
