The Portuguese introduced the festival ‘Entrudo,’ which inspired the Brazilian Carnival. In 1840, the first Rio masquerade took place. At the time, the polka and waltz were popular dances. By 1917, Africans had already influenced the Carnival by introducing samba music. During the celebration, it is customary for people to dress in contrasting roles.
