Canadians observe British Columbia Day on the first Monday of August. On this day, residents of British Columbia honour their heritage. In other Canadian provinces, the same day is known by distinct local names, such as “George Hamilton Day” in Hamilton, Ontario, and “Saskatchewan Day” in the province of the same name. British Columbia Day commemorates the discovery by explorer James Douglas of the southernmost point of Vancouver Island, the current site of Victoria, and the subsequent declaration by the British that the region would become the British Columbia colony. Other provinces also emphasise their unique aspects of culture, history, and political development.

The day is celebrated throughout Canada with parades, festivals, and other themed public gatherings. British Columbia is home to the Anime Revolution, the Vancouver Pride Parade, and the Powell Street Festival (a celebration of Asian-Canadian heritage) as prime examples.

The background of British Columbia Day

Despite the fact that British Columbia Day is not a federal government holiday like Christmas or Good Friday (though it was recognised as “legal” in 1996), most Canadians get the day off work (or the equivalent in their jurisdiction). In 1969, the Ontario government designated the first Monday in August as “Simcoe Day” in honour of anti-slavery figure John Graves Simcoe, sowing the roots for the traditional celebration to become a recognised holiday. Before long (1974 in British Columbia), other territorial governments heard proposals from prominent legislators and agreed that they should celebrate their illustrious histories formally.

The holiday is commonly referred to by Canadians as one of the “stats” (statutory holidays) or “publics,” which vary in legal significance from territory to territory and municipality to municipality.
