California Admission Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

California Admission Day is annually observed on September 9. It commemorates the day California became the 31st state in 1850, after Mexico ceded the territory to the United States in 1848. California is one of the few states that did not begin as an organised territory before becoming a state. Admission Day in California is not a federal holiday. Rather, it is a state-level observance, which means that businesses, institutions, and government offices remain open. Historically, it was celebrated with considerable pomp and ceremony, including parades and pageants. Even though the day is now low-key, it remains a significant event in Californian history.

The background of California Admission Day

The Mexican-American War began when the United States declared war on Mexico in May 1846. In what is known as the Bear Flag Revolt, American settlers in the territory of California in Mexico rebelled against the Mexican government. The Americans seized Sonoma, unfurled the Bear Flag in the region, and proclaimed it to be part of the California Republic. Navy Lieutenant Joseph Warren Revere arrived in Sonoma on July 9, 1846, and supplanted the territory’s Bear Flag with an American flag. Lieutenant Revere proclaimed California an official United States possession. Mexico and the United States signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo to end the conflict in February 1848. This treaty required Mexico to cede to the United States a significant portion of its Southwest territory, including present-day California.

At the time of the treaty’s signature, California’s population was below the 60,000-person threshold required for a territory to attain statehood. Earlier in January 1848, gold was discovered on the American River near Sacramento, and the territory witnessed a massive influx of immigrants seeking for work and good fortune. Population and prosperity exploded as a result of the Gold Rush, necessitating the establishment of civil government and local policies.

In 1849, Californians demanded statehood, and on September 9, 1850, California became the 31st state. Approximately two years after the territory’s incorporation, California joined the Union as a free, non-slave state via the Compromise of 1850. Its original capital was in San Jose, but it was relocated to Vallejo due to a lack of adequate facilities. In 1854, the capital was relocated from the small settlement of Benicia to the riverside port of Sacramento.
