Automobile Keys and Change Day occurs every year on February 28. As the name implies, it is not a day to celebrate car keys and spare change. The day celebrates pockets, the location where these seemingly unrelated items are stored. Yes, the small opening or pouch on a person’s clothing used for carrying small items. This indispensable but frequently underappreciated component of our clothing dates back to 3300 B.C.

“pocket” is derived from the old French word “pouque.” In Europe, a form of pockets known as ‘fitchets’ emerged during the 13th century. These fitchets were ordinary slits in the tunics of the people.
Not until approximately a century later did pockets become more noticeable. As time passed, pockets became detachable and were able to be worn as purses. However, these pouch-like purses were concealed beneath clothing to avoid being stolen by pickpockets.
During the 17th century, pockets became an integral part of men’s clothing and were no longer worn as removable pouches. This development did not affect women, who continued to wear pouches beneath their petticoats and skirts. In the 1800s, women continued to wear pockets on the outside of their clothing as a fashion statement.
In the 1920s, when female film stars began the trend of wearing masculine attire, pockets were finally introduced into women’s clothing. As jeans became popular towards the end of the 20th century, pockets became even more prevalent. Pockets are now an integral part of shorts, jumpsuits, skirts, and dresses, in addition to trousers. They have become indispensable to some and a fashion statement for others.
If your pockets have been collecting nothing but lint, put them to work. Use them to carry small items that you may require quickly. Small alterations perhaps?
This group activity requires participants to have something in their pockets. The game’s leader will call out items commonly found in pockets, such as a receipt, lip balm, and cell phone. As in bingo, the winner is the player with the greatest number of items called out.
