The 21st of February is Card Reading Day, a sentimental occasion on which people enjoy the greeting cards they have received over the years. There is nothing more enjoyable than perusing greeting card aisles and selecting the card that best expresses our feelings for another individual. These are special cards, and we keep them for sentimental reasons.
Greetings were exchanged through inscriptions in Ancient Egypt. In the 15th century, engravings were carved into wood for holidays such as Christmas and New Year’s Day. Not until Valentine’s Day became a tradition in the 1400s did greeting cards truly emerge. The introduction of postage stamps in England in 1840 led to an increase in Valentine’s Day correspondence. John Callcott Horsley designed the very first Christmas card in 1843.
In the United States, sentimental cards were the most popular between the 1830s and the Civil War. In the 1860s, greeting cards began to be mass-produced and became widespread. In the 1890s, greeting card production declined, and Germany dominated the market until World War I. This is when the United States once again dominated the greeting card market. Hallmark cards became internationally renowned for their innovative production techniques and superior quality.
Today, more greeting cards are exchanged in the United States than in any other nation. Despite the rise of eCards and social media greetings, physical greeting cards continue to be popular. The most popular seasonal cards are Christmas cards, while the most popular everyday cards are birthday cards.
On Card Reading Day, stationery companies and eCard companies promote and encourage everyone to send greeting cards.
