Caribbean Community Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Caribbean

Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago were the four founding members that signed the Treaty of Chaguaramas to establish CARICOM.

This year, Caribbean Community Day, also known as CARICOM Day, is observed on July 4. The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is comprised of 20 Caribbean nations, 15 of which are member states and five of which are associate members. The CARICOM secretariat headquarters is located in Georgetown, Guyana. The date was selected to commemorate the signing of the Treaty of Chaguaramas on July 4, 1973, which established CARICOM. It is an official public holiday in Guyana, and Antigua and Barbuda have also designated it as a holiday. This day is commemorated with parades, pageants, and educational campaigns about CARICOM.

The background of Caribbean Community Day

Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago were the four founding members that signed the Treaty of Chaguaramas to establish CARICOM. Errol Barrow of Barbados, Forbes Burnham of Guyana, Michael Manley of Jamaica, and Eric Williams of Trinidad and Tobago were the signatories. Their common objective was to strengthen connections between the islands and the continent.

The West Indies Federation and the Caribbean Free Trade Association were the first organisations to establish economic ties among English-speaking Caribbean nations. From 1958 to 1962, the West Indies Federation was in operation, and from 1965 to 1972, the Caribbean Free Trade Association was in operation. The Caribbean Free Trade Association was supplanted by CARICOM in 1973. The CARICOM heads of government signed the revised Treaty of Chaguaramas on July 5, 2001, during the Twenty-Second Meeting of the Conference in Nassau, The Bahamas. This treaty paved the way for the CARICOM Single Market and Economy to evolve from the concept of a common market.

Due to the 2004 Haitian coup d’état and the expulsion of Jean-Bertrand Aristide from the presidency, Haiti’s membership in CARICOM was suspended from February 29, 2004, until early June 2006. After the election of René Préval as president, Haitian officials were readmitted.

In 2013, for the 40th anniversary of CARICOM, a contest to compose a song or anthem for the organisation was launched. The anthem was intended to promote unity and inspire the identity and pride of CARICOM. The evaluators selected “Celebrating CARICOM” by Dominican singer Michele Henderson, and her first official performance took place on July 1, 2014.
