Carpe Diem Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

The earliest known instances of the English phrase 'carpe diem' date back to the nineteenth century. In 1938, however, Robert Frost's poem of the same name brought the phrase to widespread attention.

Carpe Diem Day is annually observed on February 26. The majority of us get caught up in regretting, remembering, and worrying about or planning for the future. We forget that the only moment we have is the present, that this moment, right now, is the only moment there is! The phrase ‘carpe diem’ or’seize the day’ reminds us to celebrate every joy and opportunity that life has bestowed upon us and to live life to the fullest of our abilities. It is a time to reflect on the fragility of life while also expressing gratitude for it.

The background of Carpe Diem Day

The earliest known instances of the English phrase “carpe diem” date back to the nineteenth century. In 1938, however, Robert Frost’s poem of the same name brought the phrase to widespread attention. This poem expresses the author’s desire for children to be “happy, happy, happy, and seize the day of pleasure.” He was describing how everyone, particularly children, can live a happy life by simply seizing the day.

Carpe Diem Day was founded by the friends and family of Yvette Francino after she stood by her close friend Craig Dunham during his diagnosis with ALS and subsequent passing. As Francino was inspired by Dunham’s life to live each day to the fullest, she began to inspire others to do the same. Francino had a notable year in 2014 when she raised over $12,000 for twelve separate ALS ice bucket challenges. Her zeal drew attention to the importance of ALS research as well as living a life filled with joyful experiences and meaningful relationships. This resulted in the establishment of Carpe Diem Day.

Francino spent the 60 weeks leading up to her 60th birthday completing 60 different challenges to help her seize the day in preparation for her milestone birthday. Not only do the letters “C.D.” represent carpe diem, but they are also Dunham’s initials. This day commemorates his legacy and his life.
