The background of Casimir Pulaski Day

Although Casimir Pulaski Day is not a federal holiday, it is annually celebrated with great fervour in Illinois. In fact, the day is specifically included in school curricula so that students can learn more about this hero and his role in the 18th-century American Revolutionary War. The holiday was officially recognised for the first time in 1986, due to the efforts of Mayor Harold Washington.

He introduced a resolution designating the first Monday of March as the birthday of the soldier Casimir Pulaski. In addition, in 2009, President Barack Obama signed a joint resolution designating Pulaski an honorary American citizen. This occurred approximately 230 years after his passing.

What did Casimir Pulaski accomplish to merit such recognition? Even though Pulaski was born in Poland in 1747, he was always destined to play a significant role in American history. Pulaski’s father was a military commander, so he excelled in the same field as his father. Casimir fought with the Polish Army against the Russians as a military commander until he was accused of plotting to assassinate the king and exiled from his country. Before he met Benjamin Franklin, who led him into the American army, he sought refuge in countries across the globe. Pulaski continued to fight for the Americans until his death in 1779 due to wounds sustained during the Siege of Savannah.
