There are few things older than literature. Literature has a lengthy history; it has shaped our current way of life and continues to do so centuries later.
Celebrate Teen Literature Day is observed annually on the Thursday of the second full week of April, or on April 13 this year. It is a day to encourage everyone, particularly adolescents, to read. Teenagers are, as is common knowledge, reading less and less. Considering the prevalence of smartphone and social network utilisation among adolescents, it is not surprising that their focus has shifted away from books; this has been the trend for some time. Celebrate Teen Literature Day promotes the enjoyment of reading and draws attention to the decline in the number of adolescents who read for leisure.
There are few things older than literature. Literature has a lengthy history; it has shaped our current way of life and continues to do so centuries later. Literature provides the reader, listener, or observer with amusement, enlightenment, or instruction.
Literature and writing are related but distinct. The earliest “known” writings from Sumer, Egyptian hieroglyphics, and ancient Chinese regime records are not literature. Over the years, scholars have frequently disagreed as to when written record-keeping began to resemble literature the most. It is difficult to trace the history of literature due to the fact that distance separated people and literature did not develop at a uniform rate across the globe. In addition, many texts have been lost on purpose, by accident, or due to the extinction of the original culture.
The destruction of the Library of Alexandria in the first century B.C. is one of the most well-known and significant examples. Many believed that the loss of these texts would send the world back decades or centuries. Some point to the “Epic of Gilgamesh” in Sumer in 2000 B.C. and the “Egyptian Book of the Dead” in about 1250 B.C. as the beginnings of literature. Due to distance barriers and the loss of many texts over the years, literature lacks a defined history; however, it has found its way back to us and is an integral component of our society. Literature must be preserved by everyone, especially adolescents.
