The purpose of Celebration of Mind (CoM), which was created by the Gathering 4 Gardner Foundation, is to bring people together for a day to investigate alchemy, puzzles, games, and mathematics. Martin Gardner was a renowned American author, polymath, and “mathemagician”—an individual with expertise in both mathematics and magic. He established a precedent for recreational mathematics, authored more than a hundred volumes on a variety of subjects, and introduced audiences to concepts such as the “Game of Life,” flexagons, and the Soma cube. Across the globe, his work amassed millions of readers and admirers.
Gardner’s writings inspired many individuals who pursued careers in science and mathematics, either directly or indirectly, and he had a profound effect on the discipline of mathematics. Prominent figures such as W.H. Auden, Carl Sagan, and Isaac Asimov, among others, were among his admirers. Following his demise in 2010, his admirers and companions initiated the organization of CoM events on or around October 21, his birthday. Despatchable commemoration events have taken place in thousands of locations across the globe, as well as in smaller, more intimate groups, all with the intention of appreciating what Gardner first introduced them to. These events feature enthralling and thought-provoking activities for the attendees, including visual paradoxes, conjuring illusions, and logic puzzles.
