Cesar Chavez Day is a federal holiday observed on March 31 to honour the enduring legacy of the American labour rights icon Cesar Chavez. The day was established in 2014 by former President Barack Obama. Chavez’s early life experiences shaped his leftist ideology and made him the face of the 1960s labour movement. He was born to migrant labourers. He became America’s lighting rod as a result of his persistent efforts and non-violent protests. On March 31, union members and community leaders will honour the life of this American icon and draw inspiration from his four decades of devoted service to American workers.
Cesar Estrada Chavez was born to a Mexican-American family in Yuma, Arizona on March 31, 1927. His early years were spent on a farm where his mother was a part-time labourer. In the late 1930s, as the Great Depression ravaged the United States, Chavez’s family lost their residence to foreclosure. His family, now a nomad in their own country, relocated to California in quest of employment.
Chavez was profoundly affected by the migration; he pulled out of school and began working in the fields shortly thereafter. He entered the navy in 1946 and served for two years. After receiving his discharge, he returned to farming, wed, and settled in Delano, California.
After living a life of instability, low wages, and lack of ownership, Chavez began to question the logic behind his failure to amass wealth despite years of hard labour. His search for answers led him to the path of community organising. In 1952, he became a mobilizer for the Community Service Organization, a Latino civil rights organisation. (C.S.O.).
The next decade of Chavez’s life was devoted combating racial and economic discrimination. He led thousands of voter registration campaigns and urged his community members to participate in democracy. Chavez joined forces with Dolores Huerta in 1962 after resigning from his position as national director of C.S.O following a dispute within the organisation. They founded the National Farm Workers Association together.
He spent the remainder of his life participating in regular demonstrations, strikes, and labour uprisings throughout the country. Inspired by Gandhi’s nonviolent principles, he led hundreds of sit-ins and starvation strikes.
In 1993, Chavez passed away. Later that year, President Bill Clinton posthumously awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Even decades after his death, he continues to inspire human rights activists everywhere and is revered by millions of Americans as a folk hero.
The origin of the word “strike” can be traced back to a 1768 incident in London in which workers protested a pay reduction by striking down the sails of ships.
Over 55% of Americans support the freedom to unionize, indicating a favourable perception of unions in the country.
Contrary to popular belief, only 11% of the American workforce is unionised. The total percentage of unionised American workers has never exceeded 35%.
The 1921 West Virginia confrontation between deputies and coal miners is one of the bloodiest labour uprisings in U.S. history, with more than 100 deaths on both parties.
Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign slogan, “Yes we can,” was inspired by Dolores Huerta, who coined the Spanish variant of the phrase during Cesar Chavez’s Arizona hunger strike.
